Description
This hand colored map of Maine from 1826 shows Maine's then still unresolved northern boundary. Depicts a "French Settlement" and "Indian Village" near the St. John River. The map is surrounded by text which includes information on Maine's boundaries, soil, climate, waterways, economy, education, religion, and government. Also includes a lengthy historical sketch of Maine, and lists Maine's governors. The map also points out historic events using a flag symbol, including the successful Wabanaki and French attack on Fort Loyall in 1690, the burning of Falmouth/Portland by Mowat in 1775, and the occupation of Castine during the War of 1812.
