Description
The map includes illustrations and text describing the history of Portland. Multiple textual notes reference the treatment of the Wabanaki and enslavement of African-Americans. Also included is a historic note about Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and a quotation from John Jocelyn in 1671 about the town of Casco.
The map depicts the city's waterline in 1632, 1832, and in 1932 and indicates the parts of the city destroyed during the Fire of 1866 and the bombing of the city by Mowat in 1775.
Among other sources, Dow appears to have gotten some of his historical data from William Willis' "History of Portland" published in 1831 and John Cullum's 1836 map of Portland.
* "Machigonne" is the more common spelling than "Machegonne."
