Description

Associated with the Leavitt family of Eastport, this light (faded) robin's egg blue dress may have been worn by Harriet (Lamphrey) Leavitt who married into the family in 1824. Featuring a high waist and Juliet sleeve, the silk crepe dress represents a mixture of late 1810s and early 1820s fashion. The very high waistline with sash detail evokes the 18teens, while the more modest neckline moves away from earlier 19th century fashions The long double-puff Juliet sleeves are another stylish element of the garment. Named for its Italian Renaissance reference, the Juliet sleeve was also popular during the period.
