Description

This blue and white wool check cape with ermine and chenille pom-pom trim is representative of a period cloak from the 1870s. The tassel feature is indicative of about 1869 through 1875. The ermine fur fringe that adorns the hem is comprised of 113 individual tassels, each measuring five inches long. The non-functional hood is lined and decorated in teal silk.

The cape is associated with Elizabeth P. (Simpson) Adams of Manchester, New Hampshire. A relative of Adams' daughter-in-law, Hannah (Morrison) Adams from Belfast, Maine, donated the cape to Maine Historical Society in 1954.
