Description
In 1951, Maine General, Children's Hospital, and Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary merged to become Maine Medical Center. To accommodate the staff and patients of this larger institution, the original Maine General site was significantly expanded. Construction began in 1954. Arsenal Street was closed to make way for a building constructed over it, and nine Bramhall Street houses were purchased and demolished.
