Description
The Southern Maine Radiation Therapy Institute (SMRTI) opened in 1974 with a New Diagnostic Facility on the lower level. The SMRTI boasted state-of-the-art equipment for delivering radiation therapy, including a machine that could test blood in seconds, ultrasound equipment, and a machine capable of displaying up to 50 x-rays at a time. The centerpiece was a supervoltage linear accelerator that directed cancer-killing radiation to specific areas of the body, installed behind a five foot thick lead shield.
