Description
The L.L. Bean building was constructed near the hospital's parking garage, downhill from the original Maine General Hospital building. Upon completion, the Bean building added more than 200,000 square feet of new space and increased the number of hospital beds. Other new facilities in the Bean building included 17 operating rooms, two designed specifically for open-heart surgery; special care and burn units; a dialysis center; and a blood bank. A nine-story elevator tower connected the new building to the Richards Wing.
