Two-piece ecru suit, ca. 1925

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

A two-piece ecru colored suit includes a jacket and dress, as well as a matching belt. The set is made from pongee woven tussah silk. Pongee tussah silk is a wild silk, sturdier and less soft than cultivated silk.

The suit jacket is ¾" length with a notched collar that buttons low on the body with two mother of pearl buttons. Additional decorative mother of pearl buttons appears on the belt (actually held closed by a snap) and at the jacket's cuff.

The dress is made of two different pieces of ecru colored tussah (also spelled tussar) silk. The bodice portion is a lighter weight silk, with the skirt a heavier version of the fabric. The dress has a drop waist that is accented with two patch pockets. While there are two belt loops at the back of the dress, the missing belt is not part of the collections.
