Description
The woven details on this fur-lined Jacquard silk coat include multi-colored trees, Chinese houses and pergolas, and men in gondolas. The shawl-like collar turns up to offer a fur enclosure, and the same orange fur is seen at the cuff. There are no closures or means of keeping the coat closed, alluding to the coat's more decorative function.
While the exact wearer is unknown, provenance indicates the coat was made in China for a missionary's wife. The item was once part of the Westbrook College collection, transferred to Maine Historical Society in 1993.
