Description
Classic in its mid-1960s style, this heavily coordinated outfit features a dress, matching belt, and an attached scarf made of sheer, patterned nylon fabric. The dress’ core is lined in a pale polyester, while the sleeves, scarf and belt are unlined, emphasizing the orange fabric’s transparent burnout effect. Also known as devoré, cut, or voided, the effect is a chemical process where a pattern or the fabric’s ground are chemically dissolved to create a semi-transparent design.
The ensemble is associated with Helen M. (Lane) Bruce (1899-2003) of Portland and Cape Elizabeth. A graduate of Wellesley College, Helen worked as a social worker before retiring to raise her family.
