Description
Pant suits were all the rage for women and girls during the 1970s. Purchased in Boston, this "Crazy Horse" brand leisure suit with a cinched, elastic waist jacket was made from a cotton-acrylic blend. Russ Togs Inc., a New York-based sportswear company produced the Crazy Horse line.
Traveling from Maine to Boston offered a wider selection for young adult fashions. In the 1970s, South Portland’s Maine Mall, the first of its kind in Maine, was still in its infancy, and less than half of its eventual size. While Maine-based department stores like "Porteous, Mitchell and Braun" certainly existed, as well as a plethora of specialty stores and boutiques, moderately priced young-adult sportswear lines like Crazy Horse were more prevalent in larger cities, catering to an urban demographic. A quintessential 70s plaid, the pantsuit is associated with Stephanie Butler of Kennebunk. Stephanie wore the suit during her middle school years, and recalled traveling to Boston to purchase the piece.
