Description
When Henry and Lucy Knox moved into Montpelier, their mansion at Thomaston, one of the items shipped from Philadelphia was a pianoforte.
According to local legend, it was the first pianoforte to be seen that far north.
This is believed to be the instrument, which is said to have been purchased by a Thomaston family when the estate was auctioned off in 1854. It was eventually donated to the Knox Memorial Association.
The pianoforte was made by the British firm of Longman & Broderip, which operated from 1776-1798.
