Altered mourning dress, Standish, ca. 1865

Description

A black (since faded to dark brown) silk taffeta one piece dress, which includes the addition of newer fabric, machine-stitched to the bodice, forming a false yoke effect. The bodice shows signs of alterations, with the side seams let out. The hand-sewn skirt includes a cartridge pleat back and is lined with coarse rust colored glazed cotton. A band of newer fabric was also machined stitched to the lower shirt.

Likely a mourning dress from the post Civil War period, the garment shows signs of both functional and stylistic alterations. It is difficult to know if the garment was initially a mourning dress, or updated to serve such a purpose.

The dress is associated with Bradbury family of Standish.
