Description
The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic brought many challenges to businesses of all sizes. New social distancing guidelines established by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that customers and staff keep a distance of at least 6 feet whenever possible, a difficult ask for many food and beverage providers.
Rather than choosing to remaining closed indefinitely, these limitations necessitated creative problem solving by many businesses, such as the new three step ordering protocols listed on the sign in front of Coffee by Design on Congress Street.
Although on the surface it remained very similar (make your selection, pay for it, wait for your order), the need for contact-free ordering and payment meant a transition to online and phone transactions only, followed by in person pick-ups at a strict 6 foot distance. These and other similar changes quickly became the "new normal" for many Maine businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
