Legend links this wooden canteen to General Henry Knox. According to the written acount of the donor, "Henry Knox, while stopping at the inn at Mercer, Maine, over imbibed , and, in his stupor, left his keg and canteen behind. It was saved by a local inhabitant of Mercer and passed from generation to generation through Hinkley and Allen families."
