Description
Sebago Lake Shores (Leisure Living, Inc.) was developed as a wilderness resort. Buyers were able to choose from 5 different cottage designs.
This photo was used for publicity purposes. The cottage is still standing as of 2021 at Lot #1287 Hemlock Road.
Leisure Living spent a great deal of time and money building the infrastructure of the resort. Horse stables, pools, tennis courts, beaches, Community Center, and ferry landings were some of the amenities available.
Portland Water District would not approve Leisure Living's original plan to build 1500 cottages. The number of cottages was limited to 750. At that point, Leisure Living, Inc. declared bankruptcy.
Approximately 70 original cottages were built and most are still standing as of 2021. After Leisure Living filed for bankruptcy, new owners were able to build cottages with their choice of designs.
In 1976, Leisure Living sold the island to the original owners for the sum of $1.00. The owners later organized to form the Frye Island Corporation, an owner-operated community, with 70 paid members.
