Lavinia Campbell launching, Kennebunkport, 1883

Contributed by Brick Store Museum

Description

The 697-ton schooner Lavinia Campbell was built in 1883 in the David Clark shipyard at Kennebunkport for Captain Charles N. Franklin.

At the time of her launching, 3 July 1883, she was the largest schooner ever built on the Kennebunk River. She was a coastal schooner, carrying coal to New England's mills.

She was lost in a collision with the four-masted schooner Cassie F. Bronson on the Delaware River heading for Philadelphia in September 1901.

The photograph shows her on her launching day at Kennebunkport. Behind her is the David Clark shipyard and, on the right, the South Congregational Church.
