Description
The 444-ton ship Excelsior was built at Kennebunk Landing in 1845 for Daniel W. Lord of Kennebunkport. Her home port was Boston, and she was entered into the cotton carrying trade. She was lost off Charleston, South Carolina in 1859. Her flag was given to Kennebunk's Brick Store Museum in 1941 by Daniel W. Lord's daughter, Mary Patterson Lord. The red, white, and blue flag is handmade, nineteen feet long, with letters twenty-two inches high. The photograph shows it on exhibition at The Brick Store Museum circa 1985.
