Description
These building ways and ship sheds were at the Bath Iron Works when the company was located off Water Street, before its many expansions. The building on the right, known as the Ship Shed – Building 14, utilized an early, much needed concept of building ships under cover. The two ships under construction on the ways at the left were exposed to the weather, which intermittently would have created uncomfortable working conditions for the ship builders.
In 2018, most ship construction is done in segments inside the massive buildings along Washington Street, which now block views of the Kennebec River.
