Description
Leisure Living built the Frye Island Community Center in 1972, as part of the infrastructure of their wilderness development, Sebago Lake Shores. This photo was taken for publicity purposes and edited with a red X.
Portland Water District would not approve Leisure Living's plans to build 1500 cottages on Frye Island, limiting them to 750. Leisure Living subsequently filed for bankruptcy in 1976.
Leisure Living sold the island to the original owners of the approximately 70 cottages for $1.00 in 1976. These owners continued to run the island.
The Frye Island Community Center continues to be very active and is undergoing a renovation in 2022.
