Carver Memorial Library, Searsport, ca. 1910

Description

A gift to the Town of Searsport from the heirs of Captain George A. Carver, the Carver Memorial Library was dedicated on October 13, 1910. Designed by McLain and Wright of Boston and built by H.C. Brown of Boston, the brick and masonry building stands at the corner of Mortland Road and Union Street.

Specifications called for it "to be fitted with a heating system and electric lights." Italian marble and oak flooring and interior oak columns and book cases are evidence of its high quality construction. Field stones for the exterior came from the Carver Farm, which the family later gifted to the people of the State of Maine and became Moose Point State Park.

The dedication ceremony took place at both the library and nearby at Union Hall. Elizabeth Carver Whittier, Captain Carver's daughter, presented a copper box filled with artifacts of the day and tied with a white satin ribbon. The box was placed “in the corner stone” of the new library building. In 2010, as the celebration of the Carver Memorial Library's centennial approached, the search for the box began. It was located, with its date engraved, in a hollow in the stone at the right front corner of the building. When recovered it was found that time and water had destroyed the box and most of its contents; however, one piece of the satin ribbon remained clearly visible.

The first librarian was Miss Mary McClure, who is very likely posing on the steps of the library.

An addition was later added to the rear of the building and allowed for the basement to become a children's area.
