Description
In the early 1900s N.D. Ross's store and the California House, built in the 1840s, were prominent buildings on Lincolnville Center's Main Street. The town of Lincolnville used the building on Belfast Road, just beyond the California House, as a community building, for Sunday School, and other functions.
The early Ford Model T parked by hitching posts, harnessed horse by the board sidewalk, wagon ruts in the road, and utility lines leading to the store depict a small town on the brink of change. Since electricity didn't come to Lincolnville Center until much later, after N.D. Ross was gone and his store became Scott Knight's Store, these must be telephone lines. The Lincolnville Telephone Company was founded, just around the corner from the California House, in 1904.
The community building is gone, but the store, California House, and telephone company buildings still stand in 2022. After being closed for many years, the Lincolnville General Store reopened in 2017. The much-enlarged Lincolnville Telephone Company has its offices in Nobleboro in 2022.
