Description
The major fire that swept through Phoenix Row on High Street in Belfast on February 19, 1923, destroyed the Colonial Theater, originally built in 1912.
Rebuilt in 1924, the theater resumed showing movies and offering other entertainments, which included stage shows, lectures, boxing matches, bathing beauty contests and “get rich quick nights.” Nearly a hundred years later, in 2022 the Colonial Theater operates as a mainstay of downtown Belfast.
Next door to the theater, Central Maine Power had a storefront office and advertised itself with a large electric sign. One could pay bills, buy a new all-electric appliance, or take a class in how to use the new equipment. The gas pump on the other side belonged to a Ford dealership and was one of twenty-eight filling stations in the downtown.
