Description
The Methodists' Wesley Grove Camp Meeting began in 1849 in Northport. In 1893 the 64-square-foot Auditorium replaced the outdoor stand and seating at the campground, where services and other gatherings took place. With seating for 1000 people, it became a focus for life on the campground.
For decades thousands of campers and excursionists, many arriving by steamboat, gathered in the summer for religious services, Chautauqua meetings, musical entertainment, and lectures. Social gatherings took place in the Auditorium, too, including those of the Northport Country Club. Over time, campground tents gave way to cottages and a hotel surrounding the Auditorium and natural amphitheater.
In the early 1900s the religious draw of the campground diminished, yet it has continued to flourish as a summer community of colorful "Carpenter Gothic" cottages known as Bayside. The hotel burned in 1919, and the Auditorium was razed in 1934.
