Description
Burnham, an agricultural town on the outermost northern boundary of Waldo County, was incorporated in 1824. Originally called Twenty-five Mile Pond Plantation, it is eight miles by eight miles in size.
Many industries have operated in the town over time: a tannery, brickyard, lumber, shingle and stave mills; a shoe factory, and a patent medicine company, among others. The Maine Chair Company, opened in 1922, later was an Ethan Allen Furniture Company factory. It closed in 1990.
For decades Burnham was a busy railroad town, with passenger and freight trains passing through frequently. Burnham Junction was the intersection of the Maine Central and the northern terminus of the Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad. In 1871 the town had an inn called The Rail Road House.
