Description

Stockton Springs grew as a port because in winter the Penobscot River often froze, preventing ships from getting to and from Bangor to pick up and deliver goods and materials. The railroads sought a year-round port, and that developed at Stockton Springs

In 1904 the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad purchased the rights to build a rail line from La Grange to Searsport. Work began on January 30, 1904, and on April 19 the first locomotive was unloaded in Stockton Springs from the steamer "Reliance." At the Cape Jellison site three new piers, 1600, 1500, and 1100 feet in length were constructed and an artesian well drilled to supply the rail engines with fresh water.

Northern Maine Seaport Railroad opened in 1905 for passengers and retail business. The primary products shipped out were potatoes grown in Aroostook County and lumber from Bangor. The Cape Jellison docks burned in a fire of unknown origin on November 8, 1924.

In 2010 Stockton Harbor and Marina occupied the site, and condominiums lined the shore.
