Mercy Owen Richardson's mourning veil, Cambridge, Massachusetts, ca. 1835

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Mercy Owen Richardson, a cousin of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, wore this black net veil while in mourning. The fabric features an embroidered floral pattern. While contemporary publications like "The Workwoman’s Guide" (1838) called for crepe veils, lace or netting veils were also popular mourning items.

A gathered drawstring at the top of the veil sat on the crown of a bonnet. The veil draped down the front and folded back when necessary.
