Description
A lava brooch, fashioned in a cameo style, was reportedly worn as a companion piece to Helen Bancroft Hay's green and blue striped dress. The phrase "lava jewelry" or, in this case, "lava brooch," is a broad term for jewelry made from volcanic rock, ash, or debris composite.
Originally from Portland, Helen Bancroft Hay (1834–1900) lived for many years in Massachusetts before returning to Portland later in life.
