Mourning ring for Eleanor Cummings, Portland, 1824

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

A gold mourning ring with braided hair memorialized the death of Eleanor (Heald) Cummings (1775-1824), who died at Portland on 31 May 31, 1824, and laid to rest at Portland's Eastern Cemetery. The hair work at center, under glass, is surrounded or encircled by black jet stones. An inscription on the reverse reads "EC died May 31st 1824."

Eleanor Heald Cummings was the wife of Dr. Stephen Cummings (1774-1854) and mother to Sarah Ellen (Cummings) Bradley who either commissioned or inherited the ring. At some point, the ring was resized.
