Description
This watercolor, depicting World War II soldiers lined up for a meal at Cape Elizabeth’s Fort Williams, was part of a series painted by Maine artist Alice Harmon Shaw (1913-1994). Shaw, originally from Cape Elizabeth, was a graduate of the Portland School of Applied and Fine Art, a precursor to the Maine College of Art & Design. Shaw actively exhibited her work during the 1930s and 1940s throughout Maine and the United States.
During the war, Shaw and her sister Betty both served in the American Red Cross, as an occupational therapist and in the Motor Corps respectively. Reportedly, Shaw painted these Fort William scenes from her sister's descriptions.
