Description
M.J. Eberhart, aka Nimblewill Nomad, stood atop Katahdin near the meeting point of the Appalachian Trail (AT) and the International Appalachian Trail (IAT).
The text on the photo reads: "To Dick, Thanks good friend, for all your help. The IAT is a wonderful trail! Nimblewill Nomad. Glades, Gaspé." "Glades" and "Gaspé" likely refer to the starting point of Eberhart's trek (the Everglades region in south Florida) and the end point (Cap Gaspé, Québec, Canada).
Eberhart inscribed the photo to Richard Anderson. Anderson originally conceived of the IAT in 1993, as an extension of the AT north into Canada, along the Appalachian Range. Eventually, the IAT was extended all the way to Belle Isle, Newfoundland, the continental terminus of the range in North America. In the note, Eberhart, a frequent long-distance hiker, used his trail name--a type of nickname popular with long-distance hikers and often used when leaving notes for one another in trail logbooks or registers.
