Description
Attributed to British surveyor David Thompson (1770-1857), this manuscript map details lines of verification in Cornwall, part of modern-day Ontario. Other designations include Cornwall Island (Kawehno:ke), Black River, Massena Point, and a marker for the village of Corwall. The map was likely part of a larger map, as seen by a partial title at top.
David Thompson and his son Samuel surveyed on behalf of the British Commission appointed per the Treaty of Ghent (1814.) The surveys were created in support of drawing an agreed upon Canadian-American border between Passamaquoddy Bay and the Great Lakes. This area was surveyed between 1817 and 1827, under treaty's 6th article, for the Northeast boundary moving westward.
