Description

This map is a copy of an original survey created by Hiram Burnham, surveyor for the US Commission. Written at the top of the map, "Copied from a government copy in the Secr. of State's Office, Maine, which was loaned to me for that purpose by Gov. Lincoln, and which constitutes the basis from which my brother laid down the north part of his map of Maine, in 1827-8 - S. Greenleaf." At the bottom of the map, outside neat line, "Simon Greenleaf Jan. 20, 1827."

The map contains two sections. The top is labeled "Section exhibiting the different heights through the Grand Portage," and a note below stating, "the above copy of Capt. Partridge's Section not on the map when presented. - S. Hale, Secretary."

The 5th article of the Treaty of Ghent was concerned with clarifying and creating an international border northwest of Nova Scotia to the northwesternmost head of the Connecticut River, to the River Iroquois or Catagua. This item is part of a larger archive, the Thomas Barclay collection (Coll. 26).
