Description
The 1890s embraced several womenswear trends. The exaggerated puff gigot sleeve styles reemerged mid-decade, a look not embraced by all women. This tailored design offered an alternative to the flamboyant gigot. More structured in its design, military inspired trim accents create interest, with horizontal pleats and a "passementerie" braid details on the front and shoulders enhance the rich blue silk satin fabric.
This structured two-piece ensemble, dating between 1895 and 1905, marks the end of bustle-era fashions. A modest rise at the skirt’s back, created by a small bustle pad rather than a hoop skirt, is more subdued than its 1880s counterparts. Showing signs of alteration, this silhouette could easily be worn throughout the 1890s into the next decade. The standing collar and slight S bend silhouette, seen from the side, were both popular in the early 1900s.
With no known wearer, it was donated to Maine Historical Society as part of the Westbrook College Collection.
