Description
This floral print maxi-dress, reportedly by label "Gunne Sax" was purchased at a Portland retailer for a high school prom, but never worn. The designer's label was at one point removed, rendering it difficult to confirm its origins. The romantic silhouette, inspired by 19th century pioneer style clothing, is indicative of mid-1970s styles favored by Gunne Sax, a formal and semi-formal label by designer Jessica McClintock.
Jessica McClintock (1930-2021), born Jessica Gagnon, grew up in Presque Isle. After a brief time in Massachusetts, McClintock moved to California, where her design career took shape. McClintock is probably best remembered for her bridalwear, and her influential work with the Gunne Sax label, which focused on young women’s wear. Here, the flared ruffled sleeves, floral print, and a high, tie-back waist illustrate 1970s appreciation for prairie-inspired design. The deep V neck, with a high waist were both design elements employed by Gunne Sax. While sheer, the dress is unlined. It is associated with the Butler family of Kennebunk.
