Description
Made of a voided silk velvet, this three-piece ensemble was an option for fashion forward women lounging on the beach or poolside during the 1930s. Known as glamour pyjamas or beach pyjamas (commonly spelled pajama in the US), this fashionable look, a forerunner to modern loungewear, finds its origins in India.
Dressed up or dressed down, the glamour pyjama was ideal for relaxed social affairs, combining feminine flowy fabrics and masculine trouser silhouettes. Worn over a bathing suit, fabrics were sometimes sheer, like this example with its cut velvet polka-dot design. This ensemble is associated with New Jersey socialite Ruth Trappan (1904-1997), who perhaps wore this pyjama set while she summered in Yarmouth, Maine.
