Description
Rachel Rice (1920-2018) graduated from Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. Originally from Waterford, Rachel worked at Maine General Hospital at Portland, its successor Maine Medical Center, as well as Mercy Hospital. Both Maine General and Mercy Hospital operated nursing schools, the latter opening in response to the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic.
Rachel, who married Edwin Deans in 1944, served as secretary for her nursing school’s alumni association for over 25 years. This wool cape is indicative of early to mid-20th century nursing attire. Some variation included a single, rather than double, tab enclosure.
