Susan Kincaid's Pendelton suit, Portland, ca. 1951

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Founded in the 1860s, Pendelton was initially known for its woolen trade blankets. It later positioned itself as both a mill and retailer, designing fashions from its coveted woolen products. In 1949, it introduced a womenswear line.

Made of Virgin wool and lined in rayon, this double-breasted yellow and gray Pendelton offering employs a straight welt pocket, with a band of fabric drawing attention to the hips. The skirt’s A-line silhouette contrasts with the jacket’s square design. Susan Kincaid Laskey (1931-2012) of Brunswick wore this classic suit while attending Westbrook College—then Westbrook Junior College. She graduated in 1951 with an associate degree in Medical Administration and Nursing.
