Description
In 1915, Dr. James L. McAleney (1868-1937) received this pair of handmade cotton tiger slippers from Portland's Chinese community. In appreciation for the doctor's medical services, the slippers were a gift for his new born son, William.
Dr. McAleney’s inclusive practice was unusual in a time when American medical services were largely segregated. Perhaps the doctor’s own experiences—himself a first-generation Irish American—prompted him to care for diverse communities.
