Congress Street showing Maine Charitable Mechanic Association building, Portland, ca. 1890

Description

The Maine Charitable Mechanic Association’s building on Congress Street towered over the small shops on Congress Street in the 1890s. The MCMA was founded in 1815 by a group of skilled laborers in 1815 and has had their own building since the 1850s in order to gather and store their library. Most of the other buildings located next to Mechanics’ Hall are commercial stores such as the Centennial American Tea Co., that can be seen on the left. They were replaced with the J.B. Brown building at 537 Congress Street.
