Pejepscot Company Records, Volume 1A, 1683-1814

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Volume 1A of the Pejepscot Proprietors records is comprised of copies of deeds, bonds, advertisements, meeting minutes, powers of attorney, correspondence, and settlements with rival land companies.

The volume begins with records explaining the derivation of titles to the Pejepscot lands, including deeds to land granted from King Charles I to Thomas Purchas, deeds from local Sagamores, and depositions supporting those claims. Also included are materials that relate to the Massachusetts General Court’s Committee for Eastern Claims; which include the company’s proposal and confirmation. Subsequent land divisions between the proprietors are also documented. Volume 1 also contains the Pejepscot Company’s first accounting records, including an extravagant expenditure to pay for the Committee for Eastern Claims to travel from Boston to visit the proposed area.

This volume is part of a larger archival collection (Coll. 61), which is completely digitized. To search the entire collection visit our Beyond Borders search page.
