Second District Congresswoman Olympia J. Snowe was cited by U.S. New & World Report as one of seven "Superachievers" helping to transform America. Snowe, a Republican, was known as a maverick, occasionally speaking out against the Reagan administration on carefully chosen issues. She was photographed in her Washington office.
