Description
A rabbeting plane is a tool with moving fillister that has an adjustable fence and blades of different widths. This was an advancement in plane design so that one plane could perform the function of many planes.
In the 1890s that wood plane was further refined into a steel stocked plane with many adjustable parts and blades called a combination plane.
This combination plane, exemplified here by the Stanley no. 55 with its set of blades, replaced a tool chest full of rabbet and molding planes.
The combination plane has, in turn, been replaced by the power router with dozens of bits.
