Description
Rabbet planes cut rabbets or grooves in a board. A rabbet is a cut along an edge of a board enabling two complimentarily cut boards to form an overlapping joint, such as a tongue and groove. Each particular type of cut, width or profile, required a different plane.
A rabbeting plane with moving fillister has an adjustable fence and blades of different widths, an advancement in plane design so that this one plane could perform the function of many rabbet planes. In the 1890s this wood plane was further refined into a steel stocked plane with many adjustable parts and blades called a combination plane. The combination plane, exemplified by the Stanley no. 55, (see MMN #11493} replaced a tool chest full of rabbet and molding planes. The combination plane has, in turn, been replaced by the power router with it dozens of bits.
