Road opening celebration announcement, Gray, 1923

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Up until the second quarter of the 20th century, Maine roads were notoriously difficult to negotiate, especially in spring and winter.

As this broadside from 1923 shows, it was a major event, when the section of the new cement concrete highway was completed between Gray and Auburn (present Rtes. 4, 100 and US 202).

This followed an improved gravel road built from Portland to Auburn between 1910 and 1914 as Maine's first response to motor vehicle highways.
