Description
Architecture commission for First Baptist Church at Wilmot Street in Portland, ME, 1907. The commission is associated with John Calvin Stevens and John Howard Stevens Architects. This item is part of the Stevens Architects drawings and records collection.
The National Landmark stone church was built from 1867-1869, in the wake of the Great Fire of 1866 that devastated Portland. The design represented the Romanesque Revival style of the time, and the church became a major place of ministry, evangelism, conferences, and Christian gathering for the region. First Baptist Church was popularly nicknamed "The Jesus Never Fails Church" after the motto spelled out in the stained-glass windows above the church entrance. Following a controversy within the parish, the church was demolished in September 1987, and the congregation relocated to Canco Road in North Deering.
