Description
This Chinese export porcelain chocolate pot and matching two-handled mugs are decorated with the Society of the Cincinnati emblem and marked with the initials HLK, for Henry and Lucy Knox.
This is part of a set commissioned from Canton by Major Samuel Shaw for Henry Knox, about 1790. Knox was one of the charter members of this fraternal society of Revolutionary War officers, as was Shaw.
The pot and mugs match a set commissioned for David Townsend, part of the collections at Historic Deerfield in Massachusetts. When Knox moved to his mansion, Montpelier, in Thomaston in 1795, this set of china was among the furnishings.
