Description
Henry Wadworth Longfellow, during a visit to his family home in Portland in December 1837, wrote to Geroge S. Hillard. At the time, Longfellow was a professor of foreign languages at Harvard University.
George Stillman Hillard, a close friend of Longfellow, was a lawyer in Boston. Along with three other friends in Boston, Henry Cleveland, Cornelius Felton, and Charles Sumner, they formed the "Five of Clubs," an informal group that met on Saturdays to talk of their lives, futures, travel, philosophy and books.
