Description
The Portland Company was the Knox automobile dealership for the area in the early 1900s. This is the Knox Limousine model 'R' 1910. "Knox...built large limousines, such as this 1911-1912 model. The driver or chauffeur had little protection from the elements as he drove his wealthy owners about in this "R" model. A Knox cost in the range from $3,000 to $5,000, while many other automobiles were being sold for only a few hundred dollars at the time."--Fletcher, David H. 'The Portland Company 1846-1982.' Charleston, S.C. : Arcadia Pub., 2002. 80.
