Description
Lot Myrick Morrill was born in Belgrade in 1812. In 1837, he became a lawyer, working on legislative law in Augusta beginning in 1841.
He served in the state Legislature beginning in 1853, and the state Senate in 1855. Morrill was a strong temperance supporter and was opposed to the extension of slavery.
He served three terms as governor, beginning in 1857. He was appointed to the U.S. Senate in In 1861 to fill the vacancy left when Hannibal Hamlin became Vice President of the United States. Morrill was reelected in 1863, and then lost his reelection bid in 1869. He returned to the Senate later that year, however, due to the death of Senator Fessenden. Morrill was reelected in 1871 and served until 1876 when he resigned to accept the Treasury Portfolio.
In 1870, because of poor health, Morrill returned to Maine as the Collector of Port for Portland. He died in Augusta in 1883 at the age of 71.
